On the anniversary of Prince's epic flick, let's go crazy with 80s-inspired duds built for rock royalty.
Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called wardrobe transition. And there’s no better way to shift into a new season than to channel the spotlight-grabbing layering style of Prince, who cloaked himself in shades of aubergine and goth-black for his big-screen debut, Purple Rain. The movie, now a rock-and-roll cult favorite, came out exactly 30 years ago, just as ’80s fashion reached its screeching guitar-solo climax.
The film showcased Prince as a flamboyant, emotionally suffering leading man. Clad in 6-inch platform shoes, purple-velvet coat and Victorian-style ruffled white shirt (something the Seinfeld crew would, a decade later, dub the “puffy shirt”), he was crowned the newest rock royalty.
